How to download your American Express statement as a PDF

  1. Sign in to americanexpress.com and open your transaction history and billing statements.
  2. Select the statement period you need. Amex also lets you sort and filter the transactions on screen before you export anything.
  3. Choose the PDF of the statement rather than the CSV or Excel export if you want the balances — see below for why that matters.
  4. Save the PDF.
  5. Drop it onto StatementSnap and export to Excel, CSV, or QuickBooks.

What American Express statements look like

American Express is unusual in offering its own CSV and Excel download, which raises a fair question: why convert the PDF at all? Because the two things are not the same. The CSV is transaction history — a list of what happened. The statement PDF is the closed, dated document with a previous balance, new charges, payments and credits, and a new balance, and those figures are what let anything be checked. Converting the statement gives you a spreadsheet whose total you can prove. Exporting the history gives you rows you have to trust. The other limit is time: personal accounts can view roughly the previous two years electronically, while a business Program Administrator can go back up to seven with no fee.

American Express statement questions

Amex already exports CSV and Excel. Why convert the statement?
Because the export is transaction history, not the statement. It carries no previous balance and no new balance, so nothing about it can be checked — if a transaction is missing you have no way to notice. Converting the statement PDF keeps those figures, and the reconciliation badge tells you the rows add up to the closing balance to the cent.
How far back do American Express statements go?
About two years of transactions for a personal account, viewable and downloadable electronically. Business accounts are treated differently: a Program Administrator can download statements up to seven years back at no charge.
Why are my Amex purchases showing as negative?
Because the file is written from your point of view rather than the card issuer's. Amex prints what you owe as a positive number, so a purchase looks positive on the statement. StatementSnap signs purchases negative and payments and credits positive, which is what accounting software expects on import.
Can I get an Amex statement into QuickBooks?
Yes — export as QuickBooks (QBO) rather than CSV and import it directly. Amex also offers a year-end summary download into QuickBooks and Quicken, which is a different thing: a yearly roll-up rather than the transaction-level detail from a statement.
